Creative translation is where the technical demands of language work meet something that cannot be systematised: the ability to make a piece of writing work in a new language on its own terms. A manga localisation that reads awkwardly in German has failed, regardless of whether the individual words are accurate. The same is true for film subtitles, literary fiction and marketing copy.
We work with translators who have creative writing backgrounds alongside their language qualifications. For manga and graphic novel localisation, we understand panel constraints, the relationship between lettering and visual pacing, and the very different conventions around sound effects and onomatopoeia in Japanese and German.
For film and documentary subtitles, we follow standard subtitle timing conventions and can deliver .srt, .vtt and .ass formats. For literary content, we work with the publisher or author to establish a style guide before translation begins. This is not a step we skip.
